Bright Start Hotel Site Visit
The morning started off with a visit to the Bright Start Hotel in the "Wall Street" area of Dubai. This project is unique due to the fact that it is an existing structure which originally began construction in 2003 but the project was not completed due to the economic crisis of 2008. Since then, the building has transferred owners and is now being transformed into a 5-star business hotel. After a brief introduction to the site by Mr. Pat Doyle and Mr.Hazem Jarjour we were brought on a tour of the building. On this tour the we could see the modifications which needed to be made to the original structure in order to support the new loads of the hotel. An example of this is the carbon fiber slab reinforcement seen in the below picture.
e.Construct Office Visit
Later that afternoon we visited the office of one of the most widely know pre-cast concrete suppliers, e.Construct. Here we were given several lectures by Mr. Musa Alawneh regarding the different types of pre-cast concrete (pre-tension, post-tension, bonded, unbonded, etc.) and how they are applied to construction projects. We then had a more in-depth lecture about some of the projects e.Construct is involved in, one of which is the One Thousand Museum in Miami, Florida.
Rope Pulling
After the long, yet very informative day we gathered for another "friendly" competition, rope pulling. Teams A, S and B all competed against one another until there was only one winner, Team A. Team S managed to claim second place with Team B falling to third place.

As part of the tour of the project we were shown how to mix mortar, apply the mortar to walls, lay tile and finally grout the tile. In addition to the tiling, we were given a lesson on painting (it's not as simple as it sounds). The painting consisted of several layers of plaster, stucco, primer and paint with a lot of sanding in between.
